Heat Pump as an HVAC Option
So, you are in the market for a new heating and cooling system, and live in the Louisville area. A gas furnace is the more popular choice, but there is another option. As a city with a moderate type temperature, considering a heat pump over a furnace may be in your best interest. When it’s cold outside a heat pump extracts the outside heat, and transfers it inside. When it’s warm outside, it reverses directions and acts like an air conditioner, removing heat from your home.
One advantage of a heat pump is that it moves heat instead of generating heat. This helps create wonderful efficiency. Which is great for the environment and usually great for your pocket book.
Heat pump installations usually include an indoor air handler and an outdoor central air conditioning type unit. Refrigerant draws and redistributes heat, which is circulated between the indoor and outdoor units by a compressor. The system heats the home in the winter, and cools it in the summer. A heat pump is equipped to maintain a comfortable home climate even as the outside elements fall down into low 20’s (Fahrenheit). If the temperature falls below the 20’s a heat pump won’t do as great of a job in heating your home as a furnace would since (as previously mentioned) the heat pump isn’t generating its own heat, but instead extracts the outside heat. Once the temperature is too low, the heat pump will have trouble finding any heat to extract.
Due to this situation, it can be a toss-up of whether a furnace or heat pump is the right choice for you. Get with a KCC representative to discuss your options.
